Where to find a good 12″x40 Metal Lathe?
Saturday, I found an 8″, American Made, 4-jaw lathe chuck at a garage sale for $5. In great shape, it appears to have a match plate bolted to back that has a 1-1/4″ thread. Most mid size wood lathes, and the Legacy Ornamental Mill, have a 1″ by 8 threads per inch. So, instead of trying to find a new backplate, for the lighter work load of a wood lathe, I’m thinking I could use a machined threaded adapter and a bottle of Loctite……
If I had a good metal lathe, I could do some things that would help the woodshop’s needs. Have you found a good company that has a good rep., lathes, and prices?
Except for Grizzly, where would I find a good 12″x40″ metal lathe?
Thanks,
Bill

First of all go to a metal forum such as

Do lots of reading of the forums posting and even the library before you even ask your first question. Search places like Craigslist for a used lathe. Also local newspapers.
