The latest issue of Wood magazine had plans for a simple tongue drum in it.

Thanks, I saw that too. That's what got me interested in the drum. I tried on the internet to get more info on other designs and tuning them. The sites I saw are people trying to sell them though.
Don't know where to get plans, but try checking out "Musical Instrument Design" by Bart Hopkin. I don't own the book, so I don't have it on hand to reference (I got it at the library), but he does have a section in there on tongue drums. I did find several other books with references to tongue drums, but his seemed to be the most comprehensive. He explains different techniques for laying out the keys, and how you can get really creative with the design, and don't neccesarily have to worry too much about tuning, although if you want to tune it to a certain key, he gets pretty detailed about the process.

i saw one recently in a scroll saw book that i got from the library. the book may have been published by one of the wood magazines too, i can't quite recall. it was a fairly recent book. if i can find it again i'll let you know.
