What is the best tape to use for attaching a template to a piece of wood for flush trimming. I tried double sided carpet tape, but it seems to be too strong and always leaves a sticky residue. The only other things that most home centers sell is that cheap double sided tape for mounting pictures and the like.
Any suggestions???

Use the carpet tape and remove/soften residue with mineral spirits.

J.P. has it right. Carpet tape is strong and you want it strong particularly when routing. The residue should not be an issue and cleans up with either mineral spirits or lacquer thinner. What little may remain will be quickly removed when you finish sand.
Suggestion
Watch "The Router Workshop" Sooner or later they'll use a very good double sided tape. The outside covering in brown and the tape itself is white and 1/2" wide. Works extremely well. You can also order from Oak-Park .com as they sell all routerworkshop products.

I have not tried this, but an expert lathe-turner acquaintance of mine uses the tape that is made to put golf club grips in club shafts. He says it avoids the overly strong hold of carpet tape, but still holds securely.
I have found that the carpet tape that has a cloth backing is better than the purely vinyl stuff. I do a lot of pattern routing and try to get maybe six pieces done without having to change the tape. I look for the cloth type which ultimately seems easier to remove and does not leave the residue you spoke of. Something that has helped me is to make my pattern out of melamine coated particle board. It makes a very durable pattern that also can be cleaned well with mineral spirits. It is a very inexpensive material, commonly used for shelving. Give these hints a try.
