I need to glue two pieces of 1/4″ oak ply together to make 1/2″ thick panels. (Actual thickness will be a fat 3/8th) The panels are about 12″ x 24″. I’ve considered contact cement and yellow glue applied with a roller. Any drawbacks to either and is there an alternative? The panels will be installed loosely in a frame.

I've done it one time with yellow carpenter's glue and it worked out fine. It's been 15 years and the pieces have had no problems. I would think contact cement would tend to leave a little separation between the pieces, but I've never tried it.
The yellow glue does not need to be overly heavy since there is no place for squeezeout to go.
It's critical to make sure the pieces are weighted or clamped to a flat reference surface, or you'll make a permananetly warped piece.
Thanks Wayne. Contact cement would eliminate the clamping problem and it'd be quick but i'm also a little afraid it might start separating later. I do have a 14" x 14" iron platen from an old dry mount press to help weight down the panels. Also an old 10 hp elec. motor that I've used as a weight. Guess the critical thing will be to apply the yellow glue quick, thin and even.

I've used both and both are adequate. But I would add a word of caution. I wouldn't cut the panels to exact size and then glue. Here's my take.
If you use contact cement, the slightest slip and you don't have an exact mate. Once it contacts, you have contact!
If you use glue, the panels have a tendency to slide like ball bearing on ball bearings. Well, not quite that bad but it gives you and idea. You do have time with the glue to square it up, but it always seems to be a tad off.
If you cut the panels an 1" or so oversize, you just square them after through drying with the table saw, etc., etc. If the edges will be hidden in dadoes or whatever, this becomes a mute point.

Mute point? Now Sarge, you know neither one of us could stand mis-alligned edges even if they are hidden in a groove! Think I'll experiment a bit here with both type glues since I've got lots of scrap.
Thanks

My first attempt at being "iffy" and I blew it!
