I know the smaller makita is a tough planer. Most carpenters here use one. I have one of the bigger Hitachi ones. I have found that to be a good machine. The only "fault" is that the tungsten cutters are solid tungsten, not replaceable strips, and are expensive. The flip side is that a steel cutter will provide a nicer surface.
I am going more to hitachi gear, seems like good quality.

I use the small makita, I've used it for everything from corian to deck boards, it's not bad.
listening for the secret.......searching for the sound...
I have the Dewalt planer, it works ok for the few jobs that I have used it on..

Hallelujia!. The bigger PC planer is a winner. Kinda pricey, but cheap tools makes for cheap work.
I bought the Makita some years ago. While it's a pretty good tool that has served me well enough, I'm not too impressed with the design of the fence guide bar holder. The knob used to tighten the fence bar runs in a little toothed threaded insert that's installed from the top. If you get too heavy handed with the knob you'll strip out the insert. But as I say, mine is some years old and they may have revised the design in the meantime. Or maybe you don't need the fence. I wanted something to square up the edges of salvaged solid core doors for use as desk tops and ended up making a better fence to get the square edge I needed.
