Which Jigsaw? now THAT is the question!
I have a $39 B&D jigsaw that is not giving me the performance I need. I am looking at upgrading but am not sure which one to get. The BOSCH 1590 seems to be the top ( what is the differance between the EVS andf the EVSK? ) and has a steep price. of about $180 – $200
I am a weekend hobbyist but want something that will handle 4/4 oak and not give up the ghost after 5-10ft of cutting
I hear that the DeWalt 317K is a good one and runs about $90
I have a number of Makita yools and like them, is the 4340FTC in the ball park?
Please – no one even mention Festool – that is just waaaaay toooo far out of my league and wallet
1 – measure the board twice
2 – cut it once
3 – measure the space where it is supposed to go
4 – get a new board and go back to step 1

You might take a look at Milwaukee's 6266-22. I have an older version (6266-21) and like it much better than the Bosch 1587 it replaced. More power, cuts better, and really slick blade changes. The Bosch 1590 by all accounts is much improved and if i were in the market today, in the mere mortal price range the Bosch 1590 and Milwaukee 6266 would be at the top of my list. Fwiw, the current (June) issue of Woodworkers Journal has a jigsaw review. The Bosch and Festool were ranked at the top and the Milwaukee (using their term) "an eyelash" below them. Recon tools are one way to save money- I've had good luck with all the ones I've bought. Tool Crib/Amazon usually has a good selection- factory warranty and free shipping. Check under "Outlet, Used & Reconditioned"
I own a Bosch, great jigsaw. I have heard nothing but bad things about the Dewalt jigsaws.

4/4 oak and not give up the ghost after 5-10ft of cutting...
I'd get a 3 HP Cabinet saw!
I have the Bosch 1587EVSK, and was told that the K stands for Kit. It has a plastic insert for the foot(to keep from scratching soft materials), in addition to the steel one. It kicks butt.
Whatever you get, make sure it's orbital. Cuts a lot faster than a regular jig saw. Bosch has blades called Progressor. They cut really fast, clean and are pretty durable. They're available in either tang or bayonnet end.
Rick,
I bought Bosch 1590 as a cheap alternative to a bandsaw for cutting curves. I have used it cut 2 inch thick maple legs for a piece of furniture. All cut were along curves. Excellent results. I used the progresor blade.
(1) Clean cuts
(2) fast
(3) easy to control
after wearing out two dewalt jigsaws in two years, i bought the freud fj 85 vce
its awesome and unstopable, the tooless blade change system so far is great
i install kitchen cabinet allday everyday, so i cut sinkholes in countertops a lot
i had a bosch a few tears ago and it was awesome too
only downfall of both the freud and bosch is the blade shank, those blades can be tough to find in remote areas but no problem in metroplitan areas, so i carry lots in the truck, the're not cheap either
caulking is not a piece of trim
think i had that b+d in the 70's. bought a bosch best thing i ever did ,it is always hooked up and handy in the shop have a good one dan
I have the barrel-grip Bosch. I find it's so much easier to use than the usual top-handle models.
I have the BOSCH 1590 EVSK and the K does stand for kit I believe.
I had the same experience, moving from an old Ryobi whose blades wouldn't stay straight anymore.
So far I am thoroughly impressed with the new cutting power and vertical cut (in plywood and SPF lumber).
The one thing I must say (and I read someone else complain about it, so I will ahve it checked out) is that the top of the handle near the front (I have top handle model) gets really really hot.

Another vote for the new Bosch 1590--it replaced my "homeowner" Skil and it has done great with everyhting form demo to coping trim to deck building. My only regret is that I didn't try the barrel grip modelJason Pharez Construction

The new Dewalt DW331K looks nice. It can cut flush to the front of the saw. Not sure about power or reliability though. Prior to this, I had my eye on the Bosch 1584AVSK.

I received the Sears red one for F-day. I like it as well as my old PC!
But don't take my word for it.... I don't won't to start another crapsman thread!
