Hi
I finally decided that my delta 6″ jointer is just to small for the work I’m doing. So I have 2 questions. First does anyone have any experience with the Oliver 4320 8″ jointer with the helical cutter head. I hadn’t heard of them before and saw their advert in the latest fine woodworking magazine. Secondly I’m also considering the DJ20 from Delta and the new Steel City 8″ jointer. Am I limiting my search to much with consideration that I live in Canada. I only plan to do this once so I would like to make an informed decision.
Thanks
Frank

Good decision- a 6 " jointer is usually too small to flatten and straighten a lot of the work you need to do. You said you only want to do this once so my answer is get the best jointer you can. Unfortunately my experience has been that most of the machines coming out of the Far East just do not have the precision needed and the steel does not seem to be as hard as it should be (We just stripped the thread in a cast iron part on a very expensive morticer in my school the other day!!)
To answer your specific questions: I don't know anything about the Oliver and I have not heard of anyone who has one (that does not mean they are not good!- just don't know). as far as the DJ20? I have two in my school- one is 7 years old. The bearings had to be replaced after three years and the fence was twisted and had to be replaced. Since then it has been fine. The second one is one of the "X5" series and I would not even consider buying another one of those. I have no experience with the Steel City- I looks like Delta stuff from 10 years ago but I have not heard anything one way or the other.
Your comment about living in Canada- why not buy the best! Canadian made General is way better than most other new equipment on the market. I would also look very closely at Laguna. What about used? an older Powermatic or an older DJ20 (both pre 1995) should be great.
Good luck

Thanks for your advice. That more or less confirms my thoughts.
