I am starting up a new shop and I would like some advice on jointers that you have had good success with and also which brands to avoid. I have room for a freestanding model or a benchtop. Thanks

I have has excellent success with the Powermatic 54A. If you can afford it I would opt for the 8" version.
Good Luck
Do a search for other Jointer threads, this gets hashed up a ton...
Personally, I am taking delivery of a 6" sunhill today or tomorrow.. 52" bed and recommendations from others on this board made it my final choice...
It's been hashed to death here. Everyone who has one will love theirs.. I bought a 8inch Grizzley that Has seen well over 20,000 bd.ft. without a problem.. (one $3.00 belt that I was able to replace at my local Napa dealer in 5 minutes) Mines a long bed model which I highly recommend if you ever build anything longer than a couple of feet..
In my opinion the best $500.00 I've ever spent.. If you are going wider, then give some serious consideration to the spiral cutterheads with the small square blades.. Much better (and quieter) deal.
Frenchy and shudson are on target with the 8" recommendation if it's within your budget. I have the Jet 6" which is a great machine, but if I had not been so restricted $$-wise I would have definitely gone for an 8" (the Grizzly specifically). Fuggetabout a benchtop.
While this subject has been discussed in depth in a number of threads, it might be fun trying to structure a search string that gets them. The word "jointer" of course comes up alot, so try "which" and "jointer" -- that gets you about 100 hits if you select "3 weeks" from the time-frame list. Those can be scanned fairly easily.
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Try to look at your local newspaper ads. I got a 6 inch Beaver jointer (built before 1953) for 50 $. With a little love, I was able to make it go in about a day of work.

I just got the Powermatic 54A (6"), it is a very nice machine. Worth the $.
Good Luck,
John
