Getting ready to drop some $$ on my first set of wood turning tools and I’ve got everything figured out except my scraper. I’m primarily interested in turning bowls and could use some advice on which one of these three I should get.
In order, the below pictures are:
1) Hurricane M2 Cryo 1″ (x3/8″) Heavy Duty Bowl Finishing Scraper….$114
2) Hurricane M42 Cryo 3/4″ Bowl Finishing Scraper …………………………………$82
3) Hurricane M2 Cryo 1″ Round Nose Scraper …………………………………………….$76
At first I was thinking of getting the cheaper 1″ round nose and grind / sharpen so that it has the profile of a bowl scraper. Is it ok to do this, or should I go for one of the other tools that are actual bowl scrapers? And if so, what’s the advantage / functionality of the heavy duty scraper vs. the smaller 3/4″ one?

I would discard the round nose scraper for bowl turning, it’s large radius is meant to work straight in the workpiece which is rare inside a bowl except in the bottom and it won’t do the sometime sharp turn from bottom to side inside the bowl. Then it’s a mater of preference, the smaller the work, the smaller the tool.
Gotcha. Good point about the tool vs. piece radius.
You will want to learn to use the bowl gouges for most of your work.
As far as the scrapers go, it is desirable to grind whatever shape you find will work for you, so the initial shape is not that important. Buying a shape close to what you want will save some grinding. For instance, I have one ground similar to the "bowl" scraper in your photo, but instead of the sharp corner I have a smaller radius ground opposite the long sweep.
I don't use scrapers for any stock removal so I use a negative rake. 40° on the bottom and 20° small bevel on the top for an included angle of 60°, a light grind on the bottom will leave a burr which will produce very fine shavings. This works very well for light blending of small imperfections. Note it will cut for a short time before requiring a regrind.
There are some good you tube videos on this if you are interested.
Good Luck

Thanks for the advice and pictures 27B_6.
Here's another thought. I've been given the advice that since I was considering spending that much on a heavy scraper that I might look into the Easy Wood Tools Finisher (big carbide). Any thoughts on the Finisher vs. the heavier 3/8" thick scraper above?
I have an Easy tools scraper and would not buy it again. Bought it before I knew better.
The high speed steel scrapers are more versatile and you don't have to buy expensive carbide tips. Again, you can grind any shape you want.
They cut much finer as well. Although the edge will last for only a minute or so, it takes just seconds to touch it up on the grinder. It will produce a shaving similar to that of a cabinet scraper.
I do live edge bowls and find it useful for light blending in the area of the irregular edge and transition to the bottom on the inside.
Again, I am speaking of negative rake. Too many use scrapers as a crutch for stock removal instead of learning to use the bowl gouge.
