I haven’t done any turning for many years, but am anxious to get back into it. I have been researching lathes for sometime, and have more or less settled on a Oneway 1640 or 2036. I think the 1640 would be more than adequate in all respects, except I’m concerned about the top speed of 2585RPM. I know this is fine for bowls, but am wondering about small parts like knobs, pens etc. Any comments from you experienced turners?
The 2036 tops out at 3050 RPM but is significantly more expensive.
Is 2585RPM acceptable for small parts? Would 3050RPM be much better?

The difference is insignificant 2500 is quick enough. It might make a difference if you are going to make a living turning pens.Though I doubt it!
Thanks for the advice. No I won't be earning a living turning pens, but it would be nice if I could. Working in hi-tech these days is not alot of fun.....
I work for myself ,woodworking and most times I enjoy it.Pens get really tedious but I do a run of them as freebies to customers. But turning is really addictive, just ignore all the old farts comments from Jon :-)
You'd have thought there would only be one way to go.
Well,I went the only way that made sense to me and ordered my Oneway 1640 today. Now I just have to wait - very impatiently - for 6-8 weeks for delivery. I kinda feel like a kid waiting for xmas...
I guess I'll kill time by reading up on turning, and shopping for tools and accessories.

Hullava nice lathe. Happy turning. There'll be no blaming your equipment that's for sure.
Lesz, Don't know where you live but while you are waiting check out this site and you may find an AAW chapter in your town or nearby. There is a wealth of info in most of the chapters and very knowable people. The One Way is a great lathe and am sure you will enjoy it, If not bring it on over and I will store it for you! Ha!

http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/ A good source of woodturning every thing for over 25 years, good people also.
Enjoy ......Marsh
I have the 1640 and it is superb. Have had no difficulties with the highest speed limiting work. RFI filter is highly recommended if you like to listen to your radio.
