I am in the market for a planer. Right now, I am comparing three models:
1. The new DeWalt 13″ (model DW735).
2. The Delta 13″ (model 22580).
3. The Hitachi planer/jointer combination machine (model P12RA). It has a 12 9/32″ planer and a 6 1/8″ joiner in one unit.
In terms of capacity, all of these machines have enough for me. But can anyone comment on the smoothness of cuts, snipe elimination, and any other observations.
Thanks!

According to AWW last review of planers the Delta model with two speed control is the best for the money. I like to use figured wood and the cuts per minute on the delta will provide a better finish without as much chipout. When I have the money I will get one of these. I have the old Delta 12" model now and have been very happy with it. The snipe I get with it is a workaround but I always plan for that anyway even with a planer with a locking head.

Not to invalidate the test results, but I don't believe the Dewalt 735 was available for the test as it has just come out in the past three weeks. It has gotten good reviews, but I haven't seen a side by side comparison. I don't know if it is effective or not, but the the Dewalt has a higher CPI than the Delta.
I use my Dad's Dewalt planer, The latest and greatest before the duel speed. In my opinion the Delta is a good enough tool for what I do and the new Delta has been out long enough to have been tested. This is for me because I am just a hobbyist with a honey do list of furniture to build. Dewalt has always made good tools and I have been happy with them also. I just know of the longevity of the Delta planers.
My 2 cents

It's going to be hard to get hands-on info on the new DeWalt, but the if 4 reviews I've read are close to realistic, it's a major step up for benchtop planers. The extra blade combined with a 2nd speed gives a significant increase in CPI. I like the fact that the head-lock is automatic -- major convenience factor! and there seems to be nearly-no-snipe. If it follows in the footsteps of the DW733 in terms for user-satisfaction, it should be a great planer (for a benchtop, that is).

Hi,
I too am in the market for a 12"- 13" planer. I'm very interested in the DW735 based on what I've read so far and posted a message last night hoping for an owner of one to pitch a comment or two.
Perhaps we just buy them and let everyone else know. Anyone up fro sending me a whole lot of lumber to plane?
To be honest though - I have nothing to compare the DW735 to as I have never owned or even used a planer (just watched on the TV while I was sitting on my sawdust-free couch).
I have the delta 12 1/2 " its been a good planer and I have run some pretty nasty reclaimed stuff through it. But If I were to buy a new one Id go with the new dewalt. I havent tried it but it looks awesome and easy to use and with 3 cutters ya cant go wrong. I think as of right now, Its the closest your gonna get to a floor model planer

"Perhaps we just buy them and let everyone else know. Anyone up fro sending me a whole lot of lumber to plane?" Someone's gotta take the plunge! I've got some lumber -- it'd be cheaper for you to ship the plane here though, let me give it a try and report, LOL!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Hi,
It's ordered (the DW735)! We'll now see and I "will" report to the masses here although my experience will be only with this tool.
BTW, the following link saved me another $25 bucks by jumping to the Amazon site to order this "from" the DeWalt site:

Now the wait for delivery...Kind regards - Fred
Oooo, fun. Great job finding that extra $25! Speaking of which, I got my current "Toolseeker" coupon list on Monday. If you drop me an email (reply/select "reply via email"), I'll forward it to you.
What fun -- you gonna love it!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I am also in the market for a planer and a jointer. An excursion on the web led me to some sites in the UK and Germany where they sell combination machines--called "planer thicknessers" in the UK--that are small (10 or 11") jointer-planers. DeWalt and Metabo and several other European manufacturers make these machines and they seem to be priced (less local sales taxes) in the $750-1250 range--quite reasonable considering what you seem to be getting. I e-mailed both DeWalt and Metabo and of course they don't sell these machines in the US market, nor do they plan to introduce them. Idiots. If they live up to their billing, these machines look like they'd be ideal for the small professional or home shop.
However, several UK power-tool discounters apparently will export. So, does anyone have any experience with these machines? Will their 240v 50hz motors work on 60hz current? I was looking particularly at the DeWalt 733S, the Metabo line, and machines from a German company I've never heard of called Electra Bekum, which is owned by Metabo. I suppose one alternative would be to buy the machine and just install a new motor from Woodtek or some other supplier.
Actually, one of the machines I am considering is a combination unit. The Hitachi (model P12RA). It runs about $1,250 on Amazon.
From the responses I am getting here, however, it looks like a DeWalt single-function planer might be more popular than a combination machine.
Here's a link to a couple customer reviews on Amazon. The first is the better of the two, since it's the owner's second planer.
