Hello, Everyone I was wondering; I have a couple of spear&jackson leap frog tennon saws I would like to file one crosscut and one rip. I was wondering if any one could tell me which saw set to buy and where to buy it and also how to use it as always any info will be greatly appreciated. Until I can afford a new adria or Lie-Nielsen this is what I will have to do. I know how to sharpen the saw’s one of the before mentioned sites explaines that pretty good. rb PS I always see stanley #42X’s on ebay would this be the right set to use for such small teeth? |

My uncle used to work for Disston when they were in Philadelphia Pa. This was many years ago.I recall him setting saws with either a tack hammer over a piece of flat steel, or for backsaws he used a ball peen hammer ( maybe 10 or 12 ounces) and a punch similar to a nailset. I was young then and do not really know how long it took to set a saw this way. It seemed to me that he could finish setting the teeth in an 8 point saw in three or four minutes at most.
I wouldn't recommend this method for the inexperienced,I've never tried it myself.Perhaps you have a saw that you could practice with?
mike
The anvil type saw sets probably won't work well for saws with smaller teeth, perhaps 10 teeth per inch (tpi) and above; at least that's been my experience. Frank Klausz' excellent "Hand Tools with Frank Klausz: Tuning & Using Chisels, Planes & Saws" demonstrates using a small screwdriver to set dovetail saw teeth, a method that has proved useable for me. Can't explain it very well, basically put the screwdriver between pairs of teeth and twist a bit. Hoping to look at the Rob Cosman video on dovetail saws soon to see his approach.
I think Eclipse still make the plier type saw set.
This question was also asked in the hand tools forum...
