I would like to use SketchUp for an upcoming project. When I search on it I find it’s downloadable from different sites. Not sure why all the different sites. Is there an official site? My concern is viruses, etc.

It's good to be concerned. The ONLY site from which you should be downloading SketchUp is SketchUp.com.

You can trust Dave's advice on anything SketchUp. He has personally helped me many times with it and, for example, does the drawings that FWW uses for their video Projects.
