Hi,
I am trying to start working on hand cut dovetails, I have the saw and the chisels. I don’t have the space for a full cabinent workbench, so I thought I would build the smaller benchtop bench that was in FWW in a few months ago. In that article, he used veneer presses for the vise. I was wanting to build one but put a more versatile vise on the table. But before I build the bench, I was wanting to narrow down which vise I was going to put on the table. I like the idea of lee valley’s twin vise, and when I have more space for a larger table, I will plan on moving it. Which vise type or brand does everyone use??? Is the veneer press adequate?
Thanks,
Dave

DaveR,
I built the smaller workbench several months ago and have found it extremly versatile....dovetails, routing, planing small parts. The veneer presses allow for odd shapes to be held firmly...I think they are more than adequate.
One issue with the veneer presses is where the handle comes in contact with the wood jaw. My handle stands a bit proud, I attached a couple of square pieces of acrylic about 3/8" thick,it helps. Also, I kinda wish I built my bench a bit longer and made the aprons wider( such that the veneer presses could be lower from the surface)...it would mean when routing mortices I could do both ends of the stock without readjusting...minor issue really..but thought I'd share.
From a dovetail cutting perspective I think the small workbench is great. I saw and chop out waste on the verticle...the bench holds the stock firmly with no slippage. I think the Veritas twin screw would add an awful lot of weight(and expense)to the bench...not sure its needed.
