Good afternoon. My name is Ray. I currently live in north central Iowa. I have been an amateur woodworker for about 35 years.
I am picking up an old project. It is oak, stained and partially finished, I think with polyurathane. I don’tremember for sure about the poly. I didn’t like the color so I re-stained over what was there. When I put a finish coat of acrylic I got white splotches. Thinner, alcohol and lacquer thinner did not change them.
Any ideas on how to prevent them and correct them is what I seek.

Ray - it sounds like the stain you used was not dry/cured before you used the acrylic finish. You'll have to remove the finish and start over.
Sand or strip the finish back to bare wood. Re-stain and let the stain dry until it's odor free. Depending on the weather, oil-base stains can take as long as 10 days to cure. Once the stain is cured, you won't be able to smell the oil that's in it and you can safely apply the acrylic finish.
