I would like to stain my new white oak chest of drawers a rich deep reddish. I have used red oak stain on a red oak project and the color is wonderful. When staining my white oak with the same stain I can not get the white oak to be as rich or as dark as I would like. Any suggestions would surely help.
Thanks Jim Kolstad

Can anyone give me suggestions for making an old oak floor lighter in color after removing the varnish. I'm trying to get the stain out, down to the natural wood.
*Jim K. Try a Mahogany stain. I use it when I want that deep dark red color in white oak.
*JimK,You might want to try Min Wax's Red Mahogany (#225) Wood Finish, oil based stain. The longer you let it set up the darker the finish. You could also experiment by adding a little of their Ebony (#2718) to get a "Bombay Mahogany". Of course, testing on scrap using your final finish is always a good idea.As you are probably aware, having worked with red stains on Red Oak, they do have a tendency to take much longer to dry and sometime can leach out of the open grain. Thoroughly ragging off the excess can go a long way towards reducing the dry time.DanoP.S. jimmer33, sanding.
*O.K. Dano, did you have an out of body experience and visit my shop last night....Jim, the #225 is the Mahogany stain I was referring to.
*Steve,Only the "Phantom" knows.....heheheDano
