All,
I bought some 1/4 sawn French White Oak yesterday that I plan to use for a 3×4′ cabinet. The price was good but more importantly, the pieces were S2S, clear and about 9″ wide with good color but not too many rays, unfortunately.
I’m assuming this wood will behave like regular 1/4 white oak, is that a correct assumption? The guy helping me kept suggesting I rip and reglue with biscuits to avoid issues with the 8″ wide shelving I’m planning. I’m not inclined to do that normally, the shelves will be dadoed into the sides and I would think that’s enough…but I’m not sure.
Finish wise I’m thinking about oil and shellac…maybe garnet. I read that the wood tends to amber with age. thanks

In my shop the oak of choice is French. We regularly go through at least 500 bd.ft. every month. I think you'll find it no more problematic than American WO, and your shelves will be just fine without the rip and reglue.

Ring,
Thanks, that is good to know. Would you happen to remember the finish you applied to "Sivan's Kitchen"?
I do remember the finish; it's one that we've used on dozens of kitchens:
The oak gets wiped down with caustic soda which "weathers" it immediately. Neutralized after with vinegar solution. Then a wash coat of thinned white acrylic base coat, which leaves a slightly pickled effect in the open pores of the oak. This gets rubbed off immediately with a rag while it's still wet. Then water-borne lacquer, 2-3 coats.

ring,
It's a beautiful finish thanks for sharing the details. It's also quite beyond my skill level...
I'd do it on flatsawn stuff but qs is pretty resistant to cupping. Lot less pent up torsion in the wood.

That is what I would normally do, it's just so hard to know what the French will do under pressure...;)
