I’m deciding on casing for interior doors. I have about 200 bf of 4/4 cherry I was hoping to use. DW says the cherry is too dark for her tastes, and prefers that the casing match the color of the white pearl coated maple kitchen cabinets. I could fight that battle, but I’m not gonna win, and even if I win, I’ll still lose, so…..
How is the pearl finish achieved…a quick google didn’t help…and what wood is best for that? Can the cherry be used for that, or is it best saved for another project?
Thanks!

cloud,
if by pearl you mean a kind of iridescent fleck-tone, then there are acrylic finishes available at auto supply houses, like napa, for that. usually they're best sprayed on.
I'd use poplar or mdf for that. save the cherry for a sweet project.

I mean this. Is that what you described?

I can't really tell from your photo whether it's pearl or just toned. I did some curly sycamore with an automotive pearl for some customers about a year ago. The pearl medium is actually made from fish scales, I'm told.
All I did was to use a dye stain (TransTint) to establish a base color, then seal. then I mixed a little pearl powder into some thin lacquer and built it up with several consecutive passes until I had the look I wanted, then topcoat.
You would best use a vinyl sealer and an acrylic lacquer or CAB lacquer to avoiid yellowing. Sprayig with solvent lacquers is the only way I would consider to try this. Others may have had success with other coatings, but none that I know of.
Yellow Birch would be a good choice of wood. It's a little pinkish to begin with, and I don't think it yellows as bad as some other woods.

I was referrring to a different,on-the-finish finish. But you can achieve the photo look by using Minwax's Iced Oak stain, it's very similar. Then topcoat it with a protective sealer."Anything is possible with a big enough expense account."

Wonderful! Thank you!edit: on a trip to the Minwax ( http://www.minwax.com/products/woodstain/pastels-color.cfm ) site, I found white oak, pickled oak, winter white, pale grey...but no iced oak. Actually liked the look of the pale grey and think dw might, too. If you have a lead on the iced oak, though, I'm still open...

Cherry is best saved for another project... You BET!
Where did you get the cabinets?? The manufacture may have/carry trim that matches the cabinets... Worth a call to them?
I'll ask a cabinet supplier about that. I know they have it, be/c I have a few pieces. One consideration though is that the trim would have to be purchased, while the cherry is here and paid for. :) Still, I do see the point.
