Help by placing a wet warm dish on an old table I’m left with classic white water spots. The old finish MAY be shellac ? What works ?

If the finish is shellac, then the rings can be removed by wiping over them with a cloth dampened with denatured alcohol. This procedure is tricky; you must have enough alcohol to dissolve the finish, but not so much that you “burn” the finish. The often-quoted advice is to have the cloth feel like a dog’s nose, damp but not wet. Even if the alcohol does not burn the finish, you may need to rub out the area to blend it into the rest of the top.
*If it isn't shellac then rubbing with mayonnaise may help. And then if not, try Howard's Restor-a -Finish. It will work on all finishes.
