Here in new england, I have noticed a generational difference in terminology. My father has identified old mystery boards as white wood. If they were less than 60 years old,not in the rough, and unwaterstained I know I could I.D. them. My educated guess is poplar. My real question is…….Poplar …..As you buy it in New England…..Is it all the same species? It’s Tulip right? The tall, fast growing, straight, flowering tulip. Is there anything else formerly sold regionally that it might be?

I am too young to know it as "white wood" (am I am sticking by that!!). I did check with a friend of mine who works for one of the largest lumber companies in the NE- Yes- the poplar you buy in the NE is tulip- primarily grown in the mid-atlantic states. Further south sometimes cottonwood is mixed in and sold as poplar.
Hope that helps- Bob
Thanks Bob,
If I find out anything else from "elderberries" I'll let you know.
