When I buy veneer, it’s generally in small amounts, like maybe only 20 or 30 square feet of it at a time. I also only buy very rare or very hightly figured woods in veneer.
I’ve had some good luck on ebay, and I’ve looked at Oakwood Venner and Certainly Wood.
My questions are: Whom do you buy veneer from? Do you buy off the web or in person only? Do you have anybody you’d recommend as a good supplier?

Hello I have a company just up the street called Oak wood veneer .http://www.oakwoodveneer.com/
There veneer isn't cheap, but what is these days? there Quality is second to none! the people are friendly ,there prices are reasonable for what you get.
You could do worse.
I would recemend them.

I buy my veneer on e-bay, so if you would quit I could start getting some better deals! :)

I'm lucky enough to live just over the water from Edensaw's veneer warehouse over in Seattle. Haven't bought from them yet, but have visited the warehouse. They've got anything I could possibly imagine needing, so that's where I'll go when the time comes.

A & M Wood Specialty has never let me down... most of their veneers have pictures on their web site and they can send a sample or e-mail a picture of the flitch you will be buying from.http://www.forloversofwood.comDon Kondra - Furniture Designer/Maker

Not the biggest dealer on the web, but he deals primarily in small quantities of beautiful veneer, has photos of everything, has been scrupulously honest with me, is quite friendly and very helpful. His prices seem pretty good to me given the level of service, and I have been happy with every order. When one burl veneer came apart in shipping he sent me an even nicer one free of charge.
Joe is a really decent guy, I bought my veneer press from him and will definitely buy more veneer from him as well.
I've bought veneer from Constantine and Certainly Wood. Half the time, my order from Constantine has been disappointing. Certainly Wood has never disappointed me. I don't know of a supplier for small orders that's better.
Certainly Wood is good to deal with, and you should try B & B Rare Woods, also. Talk to Dave, great to deal with.
Wow- thanks everyone- that was just what I was looking for. I’ll definitely give A&M, Joe W., and Certainly Wood a try.
Curtis- it sounds like you’re close enough to Oakwood to go and look in person, right? Or have you ordered veneer sight unseen? They’ve got a pretty big web presence.
Doug- I hate to give away my eBay secrets too, but I don’t buy much, so look for a seller named “greatdane6”. I just got some AMAZING quilted maple from him.
I think ForestGirl has got it made, with the big veneer supplier close by. I don’t know of any in Houston, and I don’t think any of the big mills here do veneer.
Last, I think Don and Terence really hit the nail on the head. The real issue in veneer is that each flitch can vary a ton in appearance, and you have to see what each is going to look like before you get it. Walnut burl may describe a type of veneer, but there are endless variations…
Bacon Veneer.
They are primarily wholesale, so retail stuff is likely at the discretion of the individual store, so don't be a rampant consumer.
Lots of off-cuts here in Calgary. Also wierd stuff, like walnut veneer cores, suitable for cabriole legs from time to time.
