I'd say cost. Cost of materials, cost of tools, cost of doing business, the psychological cost of not working wood.
Who's driving...
The serious hobby woodworkers.
They have jobs that support tool purchases, classes, wood, magazines, etc. Time is also 'meaningless', so they have the time to do things any way they want (by hand for instance)
