I’ve been offered some air dried 18-20 inch wide (maybe wider) cherry boards that are 12-14 foot long. They are stickered and best I understand they are clear of defects. What would they be worth per bd ft?
And how many of you would hit me upside the head if I had to pull a Norm and rip it down just to fit it in my planer…..since I can’t afford any handplanes right now?

Unless cherry that wide is common where your'e at I'd say buy it & set it aside till you can afford the tools to work it. Figure out the value of what you could make with boards like that.
I'd expect to pay at least $10/bf for 4/4 boards that wide. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to see them 20-50% higher.
"and how many would hit....."
It depends upon how wide your planer is and how much sapwood is on those boards....And what grade, and how many boards you have, and what you want to make with it.
Man if you dont want them I'll be up in the area next week and I'll take all I can get!
I wouldnt rip them down but thats me, hell I probably wont cry if you do but........
Buy them, sticker them and wait till you have a job for them. You can always find a shop that will plane or wide belt sand them for you. You dont have to own a wide plane to get them done!
Worth per bd ft, if they are as advertised I think some one else mentioned it, maybe close to $10 bd ft.

I think $10/bdft could be a good price.
If they are flat/thick enough to finish at 13/16", are defect free, and have reasonable figure, I could see paying more.
bankruptedbynorm,
Common around here, up to 22 inch .. $1.85 for FAS I'll admit that wide in Cherry isn't terribly common.. Cherry is a nursing wood, it's usually the first tree back after a fire or other clearcut but doesn't like competition so it doesn't get that big too often.. I've actually seen trees that were more than 48 inches across but the sawmill can't handle anything wider than 22 inches, so it's whittled away and much is wasted in getting it sawn.
Thanks to all for the input. The offer is for $3 bd ft.......I'll have to see if I can talk him down.

AHHH Cherry,
it holds a special place in my heart. It is awesome to work with if you have the patience and looks great when finished (unless your my mother who put 3 coats of whit paint on a dresser beacuse it was a shade too dark) finding cherry that wide is not all that common. My understanding is that the trees that large tend to rot as they age. If you dont jump on this or sell them, You know the next day you will regret it.
