I am planning to build a roll top desk for sound board. In order to allow access to the entire width of the sound board, I need a tambor door that is 60″ wide. I built a 48″ roll top a few years ago, and it works fine. I would appreciate any feed back from folks that have tried something 60″ or wider. How did it work? Were there problems with racking and binding? I’m planning on the door being 7/16ths thick to help reduce sagging. Are there other issues I should consider? Thanks for the comments.

Oak,
Get your stock out well in advance of glueing it to the canvas. Rip the strips (more than you'll need) and let them lay for a few days. Discard any that warp or twist. The rest should do fine. One big old "S" rolltop that I re canvassed a while back had three strips of canvas about 3" wide glued onto the back of the fabric holding the strips together--one down each end and one down the center. Seems like a good idea, for some add'l strength. Do your glue up on a good flat surface.
The canvas holding the old top had disintegrated, and several of the strips were warped. I had concerns about the top working smoothly after reassembly, but it worked very well. It was around 60" long, and after I waxed the track I ran in, slid very easily.
Good luck,
Ray
