Wilke Machinery Jointer and Tablesaw
Wondering if anyone has an opinion of the Yorkcraft 6″ Jointer and the Bridgewood TSC-10CL Table Saw? I am considering purchasing these items for my shop and do not have the ability to view them in person before I buy. Want to make sure I am not making a mistake. Any suggestions??
Thanks, SawdustJ

Can't help you on these two items but I ourchased the 15" planner and have been very pleased with the product and the folks at Wilke.

The Yorkcraft has certainly gotten good reviews in the magazines, but based on what I've read here, you'd be well advised to check on the shipping costs for these machines. Unless I'm getting my brands mixed up, they can sometimes be prohibitive.

The shipping costs bothered me also until I did my own checking and what we have come to accept as low cost shipping, or no charge at all, is simply subsidized in the selling price. Dollar for dollar, Wilke was still cheaper after pricing comparable planers and the shiping costs. I called shippers to get quotes because I wanted to make sure they wern't making up for the low equipment costs by taking something back from the shipping charges and found that the true cost to ship the planer was pretty close to what they quoted me.
Botom line, ya gotta look at the bottom line.

Doug, I was simply relaying my memory of other people's posts. They were talkin' big shipping charges. Here's Matthew's breakdown of "real cost" when shipping is included (6" jointers):

Here's a breakdown of the jointers I'm [Matthew speaking] considering, with tax and/or shipping figured in. Listed from most to least expensive:
Powermatic 54A:Base: $780 -- Real Cost: $820
Grizzly G1182ZXHW:Base: $555 -- Real Cost: $613
Delta 37-275X:Base: $580 -- Real Cost: $610
Yorkcraft YC-6J:Base: $339 -- Real Cost: $540
Ridgid JP0610:Base: $340 -- Real Cost: $357forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Forestgirl,
I'll be double-checking with Wilke on their shipping costs. I was quoted $200 for shipping a Yorkcraft YC-6J jointer, but then someone here on Knots responded that this was incorrect. The mystery should be cleared up when I e-mail Wilke and ask them to confirm the cost on this item. Then I'll report back.Since I am still looking for a good new jointer, this is relevant to me as well as to the person who started this discussion!
I live near York, PA so shipping wasn't a problem for me -- I bought the Yorkcraft 8" jointer floor model 3 months ago. Besides saving on shipping, I didn't have to assemble it either :-)
My decision was that almost any 8" jointer would be better than the best 6" jointer. While I didn't find any reviews of the 8" model per se, Forestgirl's right that the 6" model did fairly well in the FWW tools and shops 2002 (or 2003?) issue. I didn't see much difference in the models other than capacity so I went for it. I like it so far -- it has worked like a champ for me.
