I’m getting ready to put a finish on a birch bed I’ve been working on. I’m going to do most of the finishing before assembly including dying to an “expresso” color (SWMBO’s directive) to avoid all the dark corners and such. Before dying I’m going to use a spit coat of shellac (#1) and want to know if I should keep this off the M & T’s and other glue areas as I’m thinking that if it lessens the absorption of dye, will it also lessen the absorption of glue. Thanks for the help…Tim

You are very correct in your assumption that the spit coat WILL lessen the glues holding strength, Glue works it's best on freshly jointed lumber.
