I have a small project using quartersawn oak and I wanted to attempt fuming it rather than custom mixing stain as I have done in that past.
I was going to make a small fuming tent using scrapes and heavy poly.
The project is a pot rack for the kitchen that is 15″ X 30″.
Will non commercial ammonia work? I’m taking about plain old grocery store bought ammonia.
As a secondary question…does ammonia have any effect on copper?

Kevin, I don't think it will. Easiest way to find out is to try to fume a scrap or two. Use a foil pie plate to put the ammonia in - you want the liquid exposing a lot of surface area for evaporation and release of fumes. Please let us know if it works.
*Thanks!Spent a couple hours last night hammering copper so the project is nearing the finishing phase.Tonight I'll throw together a small tent and try some cut off scrapes to see if it will have any effect.I'll post the results within the next few days.
*I don't think household ammonia will work. Go here to read an article about "Fuming".http://members.home.net/jdkx2/links.htm
