Hello all,
I received an old/used 10″ Wilton quick release wood vise for Christmas that my father had purchased at an auction. I cleaned it up a bit and installed in on my bench today. I went to use the vise for the first time only to find that you can only slightly tighten the vise before the quick release nut essentially gives way and the vise pops backward a couple threads. It is an acme threaded screw and both the screw and nut are in good shape. I lubed the screw and nut slightly with some vaseline (had it in the shop) before reassembly to get everything to turn smooth as silk. Could this lubrication be causing the slipping? Or is there possibly something else wrong with the vise?

If the quick release is slipping then I'd suspect something is broken/bent/worn in that mechanism. I'd disassemble it for a carefull inspection. Look especially at he "teeth" that engage the screw -- do they appear to be worn? Also, check that the acme threads on the screw aren't worn or broken, but I really doubt that the screw itself would be bad. And if there is a spring involved with the Q/R mechanism, be sure it's not broken or fatigued.
There can't be that many things that could be causing a problem on a vise.

Just saw this old post after posting a message about the exact same thing w/ an old Massey vise. Did your problem w/ the Wilton ever work out? Was it a waste of time? I think perhaps that much of the hoopla over old vises (w/ this quick release design, anyway) isn't warrented. Considering the time put in to fixing an old relic w/ a lousy design, might as well purchase a new Jorgensen (or Chinese vise).
