Hey All,
Love the windsor stool in a recent FWW. I’m looking at the seat in the pictures. I can’t tell whether they’re made using the “adze/chisel/scorp/traviser” method or whether they’re turned.
If they’re turned, does it just turn like a really shallow bowl with a bead or two on the edge? Do you turn the bevel on the underside as well?
Any ideas?

Matthew,
If it was the Michael Dunbar version he described it's construction in his book, "The American Country Woodworker." He starts with a 1 1/2" by 14" blank; cuts three beads with a skew; hollows the top 5 3/4" out from the center with a gouge to a depth of 1/2" or so; with blank still mounted to the faceplate, pencil mark the bottom of the seat 3/4" in from the edge and then another mark on the the edge 3/4" up from the bottom, remove the area between the lines. Alternately you can hand shape the blank with a scorp and etc., omitting the edge beading, but shaping the edge with drawknife and spokeshave. Have fun.
