So I walked out to my garage that serves as my workshop yesterday and was horrified to see that the table top of my table saw was covered in rust…after calming down and moving a finger over it I realized it was surface rust from being in an unheated uninsulated garage for this past fall and this winter and I have done no projects for almost 3 weeks now because I have been looking for a economical way to heat my workspace.
Prior to this I usually rub down the table top with furniture wax every other session or so. I am wondering how to best protect my steel tops in the garage during this winter when I am out there with less frequency. Should I have oiled down my router table (steel) and Table Saw tables before this winter? I live outside Chicago in Northwest Indiana and it has been freezing and thawing alot lately with more than the usual amount of humidity in the air.
What should I use to remove this light surface rust/oxidation? It is light enough that I can rub it off with a finger….

Spray your machines with Boeshield T-9 and don't wipe it off. If you have covers, I would use heavy canvas or the best would be those gore-tex covers from HTC. Covering them is not necessary, but it keeps the dirt from sticking to your cast iron tops covered with Boeshield.
You should be able to remove the surface rust with WD-40 and steel wool, but if it too much Boeshield makes a rust-free product. Rust remover usually contain phosphoric acid so be careful. I think a little elbow grease is all you need for the rust. If it is a little tough in areas, try a razor scraper then steel wool.

remove light rust with white vinegar and steel wool.
rag buff dry
Then the Boeshield, let it sit a few, and buf it in. I've been using it for years - whenever i change a blade essentially, and no rust

WAX and another layer of wax that wipes off the underneath and makes good as it gets for protection..
