Do a search on here for the reaction to that article. Most felt it was a very poorly researched article and not at all inclusive of better finishes available to be wipe on.
I agree in that the article really focused on durability. Little mention was made about the esthetics of each product.<!----><!----><!---->
You mentioned that there are better finishes available. What have you used that has the same look and feel as BLO, but has good durability?<!----><!---->
I have used Watco, either the real product or one I made up. And then finished with a non-poly wipe on varnish.

#1 was Minwax Wipe-on Poly. I don't remember the others. Rick
My favorite remains Liberon Finishing Oil.
