I don’t use nails except in shop furniture. In house furniture, I even avoid screws as much as possible except when attaching hardware. Do any of you use nails in your better stuff?. Under what circumstances?

I used to use metal fasteners for a variety of tasks, but recently I have made attempts to eliminate them. I found my designs are stronger and more stable without metal. An added bonus to this approach is if I end up with a weak link (so to speak) I can add a fastener and correct the problem.
I'm not a purist either way, I will use what is appropriate for the task at hand. There is a lot to be said for traditional joinery, and the craftsmanship that it entails, but there are times when screws or other hardware work quite well (for example, attaching a table top). I don't use nails, other than the occassional brad.
I'd be willing to bet that if the craftsman of antiquity had access to inexpensive metal hardware, they would have used it as well.
Joe,
We're just starting to use nails in our products. When selling to a large well-known foundation/museum/attraction that insists on historic accuracy one of the specs was to use period nails for a particular visible application. Because it's historically correct, we're moving that direction with our other products.
No gimmick fonts, sizes or colors here; but I'm having to close the g*dd*mn spell checker after every letter or two---Aaaaarrrgh!!!
