So I’m new to wood working and decided to try making an Ash Tray out of Oak. My project is almost complete (waiting to apply 2nd coat of Finish).
I decided to place a 16ga Copper disc on the bottom of the tray to protect it from burns. My intention is to adhere it in place with clear silicone caulk so it doesn’t get tossed out by mistake when dumping out the ash and also to make it relatively easy to remove if I want to refinish or something later on.
Is this a logical route or does anybody have a different approach. Thanks

After making a candle holder that almost burned down a house, I quit making wood items that came in contact even indirectly with burning items.
Well sorry to hear that, but this is for Cigars which typically go out on their own. I just wanted to avoid burn marks on the wood.
If you stick it down with anything, you'll have to pry it up (and likely bend it) to get it out. I'd glue it down with hardware store epoxy, and let it be.
If it is a flat disc crap will get under it. Think about an oversized disc pounded into the shape of your ashtray, a metal liner really. Lift-out or glued in it will be cleaner.
