I live on windward Oahu and I work close enough to home that I usually go home for lunch. Today as I neared home, I saw that a neighbor was removing a “Noni” tree from his yard and already had the top cut off with a 4 foot tall, 8 inch diameter stump that he was starting to cut in half with a hand saw. I immediately suggested that I get my chainsaw because I wanted the wood. I walked into my house, changed clothes, opened the shop, grabbed my chainsaw and some hearing protectors, started the saw in the yard, set it in the back of the pickup, still idling with the chain break on, drove a block to the neighbors, cut the stump off at the ground, threw it in the truck, parked at home, put the chainsaw in the shop, elapsed time 18 minutes. Changed clothes, ate my lunch, went back to work, only a few minutes late. “Noni” is the Hawaiian name for Morinda citrifolia. It’s fruit is valued across Polynesia for its medicinal properties so it grows in Hawaiian yards and does not get very big and is seldom cut down. The wood is bright yellow when first cut and I believe is of a medium density. I have only once before had a chance to work with it and this is much larger than the piece I had then. So how many of you hobbiests with office jobs have ever had a chance to fire up your chainsaw and whack a tree on your lunch break? Aloha

Hi Olopua, I guess that wood harvesting during your lunch break must be another 'down-side' of living in paradise. Can you post a picture of something made from 'Noni' wood? It sounds interesting.
