My maple den almost near completed; great carpentry work. I noticed that some of the crown pieces were stained a medium brown and some blotching occurred. He used a liquid stain w/o conditioner. He says if I want to condition it, to go ahead and he’ll come with the stain later (next day or so I presume). Trouble is the Minwax conditioner says to apply stain w/i 2 hours. Is their another type of conditioner that will reduce blotchiness where the stain can be applied a day or few days later?? You response appreciated. Thanks. Joe

Basicly there are two types of "conditioners." One is nothing more than mineral spirits which is applied and the stain applied right after. The mineral spirits is absorbed into the areas that absorb stain thereby reducing the stain that is absorbed into the same area.
The second kind actually dries and minimizes the absorbsion into the wood of any later stain. A one pound cut (spit coat) of shellac works as well as anything else here but a highly thinned coat (10 parts mineral spirits to one part varnish) of varnish could work also.
BTW, all the above presumes that the stain is an oil based pigment or dye stain.
