I am in the middle of building a mission style triple dresser. The plans call for the top (app.60×20, with boards running the length of the top) to be notched to accomodate the 4 legs/posts which extend above the top a few inches. It seems to me that when the top expands, it will push the legs apart somewhat. Does it make sense to notch the top with about 1/16 of a gap around the leg? but then it will not be a nice, tight finished look. Any thoughts or advice. Thanks, PMM

What I have seen done in cases like this is to recess a short "fake" end into the horizontal surface so it just looks like the vertical piece goes through. The vertical piece actually stops at the underside of the horizontal piece. That way, you can fasten your top in the usual fashion (e.g., elongated holes, clips, etc.) to allow for expansion/contraction.

Thanks for your advice. For some reason I didn't think of that.
