I need some advice in finishing a piece I am building the piece is made of mahogany and Paduk and I wish to have a durable yet clear finish that is water resistant as well as sharp and alive and will let the natural beauty of the woods be seen thru the finish.
Any suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

Benny,
The first question I have is what is the piece? What is expected of the finish?
Good old water white nitrocellulose lacquer will give you a sharp and clear finish as will shellac.
A lot depends on what you expect of the finish.
Let me know.

Hello Peter,The piece I am finishing will be a blueprint cabinet in my office so there will be some exposure to sun, I also plan on putting a few items on the top of the cabinet. What I was thinking about doing was to oil the cabinet first and then either use a lacquer or a varathane to give it a good solid protection as I don't need to worry about it getting banged or abused. I also just or safety sake thought I should make it able to withstand water in case I spill some on the cabinet at any time. Thanks for your help and i await your reply.Take Care
Benny
