My grandfather did a lot of work which we usually referred to as wood inlay but I now understand to be marquetry. He started with chessboards but eventually was making extremely elaborate pictures. He had a large selection of different types of wood from some unknown source. It wasn’t thin like veneer but thicker, about 1/8 inch as best I can tell. I’ve searched online but am not able to find similar material.

Veneers aren't as thick as they once were but here is a source for some thicker options.

Thanks so much. I may give that a try although it says that the finished work is only 1/16 inch. Looking at one of my grandfather's chessboards, the edges of the border and trim pieces look to be about 1/8 inch thick but I can't tell exactly how thick the rest of the material is.
