I am building an entertainment center and have gotten confused on what direction the wood grain should run for some cabinet doors and drawer.
The two outside doors are 18″ wide and 14″ high while the middle drawer is 18″ wide and 7″ high. Above this is are three open shelves to hold electronic components which are about 6″ high. The entire cabinet is about 60″ X 60″ with the doors and drawer at the bottom of the cabinet. Mix horizontal & vertical or all horizontal ???.
The wood is going to be cherry.

Which way would you do it? Make a quick sketch on paper and draw lines for the wood grain direction. Which do you like better, horizontal? vertical? Mixed?
It is truly a matter of taste. I know people who would have the grain vertical on the doors and horizontal on the drawers. Some designers I work with swear by short grain drawers (vertical) with vertical grain doors. What I haven't seen is horizontal grain on the doors, but not because it is wrong, simply because I haven't ever seen it. Maybe yours will be the first!
Go with your taste. There really is no right or wrong. If you absolutely want to know what is generally done, a visit to a couple of furniture stores will help you better understand the status quo, but not the "right or wrong".
Enjoy your project JL

Hi Atlas ,
It can depend on the type of drawer faces you will make , solid typically runs horizontal , with frame and panel faces much of the time the grain in the panels is vertical .
