Tough to identify painted wood, grain looks like mahogany but could be lauan or other low grade material.
Looks like an imported hardwood. A lot of inexpensive furniture from overseas uses this open pored wood.

My guess would be paulownia since its pore structure is very similar to that seen on a lot of inexpensive imported furniture. The trees are fast growing and plantation raised, plus it's light and easy to mill. Its natural color should be a cream to light yellow and it's somewhat soft so if you can dig a fingernail into that may be another clue. It will probably look like an open-pored maple when you're done.
