I had the thought to convert an old shipping container (8′ X 40′) into a lumber drying kiln. Would I need anything more than a commercial dehumidifier and well placed exhaust fans? I don’t mind a little extra dry time if it’ll save me from having to purchase an on market system.
My intention is for reclamated lumber for flooring and finish work. Very little new growth lumber.
Any advice, opinion or close to topic discussion is very much appreciated.

There is a forum on woodweb dedicated to this. You can probably find more information by others who have done the same thing. Here is a link.

Before posting, you might want to search the archives in the top right corner of their home page.

We are in the process of doing that. You'll need a Nyle L200 dehumidifacation kiln. You need heat as well as dehumidifacation. Being able to raise the temperature allows you to kill bugs or set pitch. You will also need an insulated refrigerator container. Our main use is reclaimed lumber. You can also get electronic dew point meters. Better than wet bulbs. You need to do a lot more research. Nyle says the 200 is too small for a 40' container but i've been to a mill in Bloomfield Ct where a guy has been using one successfully for a number of years for green wood. There's a baffle system with 4 fans to direct the air, carts, tracks for carts and a heck of a lot more involved. We are pretty resourceful and can cut a lot of corners but we know exactly what to do.
There's also special taller containers available. Stainless steel insides is a must. The insulated container is cheaper in the long run.

Thanks for the responses. I've known about woodweb.com for some time but never think about it when it comes to wanting a question answered.
At least today I had enough sense to bookmark it.Thanks again!
