I am a potential newbee to woodturning and I have a shot at buying a Rockwell-Delta 46-525. The owner thinks it is about 20 to 23 yrs old. He thinks his deceased father paid around $1500. for it. It have four pulleys and variable speed, either 3 or 4 speed variable. It has been sitting in a dust bowl since new, with very little use. Could someone please tell me what I can expect to pay for this unit. The owner (the son of the original owner, not a woodworker), thinks that it is probably still worth the original price. I do not, but I tend to be tight. The lathe looks like the Grizzly lathe that sells for $675. Not saying the Grizzly even compares, just trying to give any of you veterans a visual clue. Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe $300.00.
its a good lathe, I use to own one. but its 20 yrs old!
The only used lathe Ide buy for that kind of money would be a Conover lathe. (and thats a big maybe.)
heve your buddy check out Ebay or those used mechine places like ReTool, and find out what his lathe would be running for. but no matter $1.500 is way out of the ball park. Ide keep looking elsewhere.
I have a similar unit I purchased from a local machinery rebuilder. With new bearings installed by the rebuilder it ran me ~ $400, as I recall, some eight years ago.

That is a nice lathe as wood lathes go but as several have said, it is WAY too high. Our woodworking group has tool sales and decent older lathes are always up for sale for $50 - $100 bucks. I bought my last one for $40 and sold the carving chisels that came with it on ebay for $125 and kept the lathe chisels.
NO WAY! Maybe if it's really clean, $450.00-$550.00 tops.
