Anyone ever built a wood mailbox? I was thinking of using 4/4 mahogany. I’m not sure how to finish it to keep it weather tight and from deteriorating.

I built my wooden mailbox from 1/2" plywood, covered with lapped siding made from thin Japanese hinoki (close to Port Orford Cedar); I painted the shingles with ordinary white house paint (I repaint every year or 18 mos). The roof is also plywood covered with tar paper and copper shingles I cut from ordinary copper sheet. The "chimney" has an electric eye in it that turns on a small night light in the evening, lighting up the little windows in the gables. The brown box on the end is the doorbell button and intercom; the door is in the side and lifts open via stainless steel piano hinge.
The thing has been waterproof for 5 years, through storm and snow, and I suppose a lot of variations could be made. Build yours with the same kind of care you would for a real building and it'll be waterproof enough; you can see a picture of mine at:
