I’m about to start building a base for a large slab burl coffee table and am not sure if I have to worry about expansion and contraction in the same way I would with a normal table top. Will a four inch thick big leaf maple burl have much movement and if so what direction since there is no grain direction?

Movement
Hey Swenson -
Maybe a trick question - but I'll take a go at it. I say probably maybe yes - I think.

It will move
Hi,
It is made of wood so it wil move. The difference between it and a regular table top is that you don't know how it will:)
Biggest thing to worry about is internal stresses and uneven movement.
movement
I guess I'd better attach the base to allow for this. Right now it's looking like short cherry legs with a reverse taper and thick aprons. This thing weighs a lot. Thanks to you both.
