I want to make a “Roubo” style bench. I originally planed on a “European” style and at the time was very busy so I gave in and bought a pre-made top. The top is of hard maple with quartersawn 1-3/4″x1-3/4″ x 60″ strips glued up (a 24″x 60″ is all I have room for). When things died down I started to think about how the front legs moved forward flush would be a great advantage. My problem is mass so I won’t have to have skirts. I was thinking about glueing another layer to to top to make it thicker but worried if it would be alright or break itself apart due to wood movement. I am asking for your thoughts because I need a workbench and have been stymied, not to mention the hard to come-by cash for the top and vises.

You don't need a double thick top and your bench doesn't have to weigh 800 pounds, either. Make your leg construction so it can withstand lateral movement. Bolted joints allow you to adjust and tighten things up with seasonal changes.
