There are lots of wood your dad might be interested in receiving, however the stuff is expensive. I like to use a small piece of fancy wood for my coffee cup in the shop…maybe your dad would like that too. You would need to find a store that carries that kind of wood, and perhaps buy a small “turning piece”…that is, wood they use to put on the lathe.
Another thought ! I wish I had a good pencil sharpener in my shop. Everytime I go to mark something my pencil is dull. They sell special sharpeners for our square pencils. Just a thought…

4" long pocket calipers
Most of the hardwood retailers I've been to have a bin of shorts or offcuts for a few dollars apiece. You can get small pieces of some unusual or dramatic looking woods without spending a lot of money. I'm working up some nice knife handles from wood I paid less than $5 for.
