All,
I’m considering using some scrap cherry I have for a 20″ round top. The three pieces are about 21×7.5×5/4 from which I will extract about a 1″ x20″ top. I’m starting to hand plane and discovering the wood has that mottled look and the grain is a bit squirrley….but, most important, it has these thin black lines between the rings/grain. It also has a bit of heartwood which ai am planing to remove.
Is this wood any good?…or will it fall apart/twist, cup, etc.
thanks

Lysigenous gum canals (the black streaks) are sometimes present. They are normal, sometimes formed as the result of the work of cambial miners. I have never found them to a problem with regard to the overall quality of the material or it performance.
Stanley,
Thanks, that is good news....just spent the last two hours getting the boards flat and square....they may be kinda interesting when they're finished. I retrieved these from a dumster so I was not sure if there was another reason.
