Hi All,
Does anyone know of a wood that smells like puke?
I pulled a bunch of good wood out of the garbage in the form of crates. Said “Made in Indonesia” on the crates.
Any ideas what it is?
Cheers

White oak smells like apples, red oak, however, doesnt smell that nice. Course, what appeals to one, doesn't necessarily appeal to someone else?
Nope....split a lot of wood in my day and green red oak, when split smells like apples to me. Now it just might be me but I have also smelled some puke in my day too..usually generated my me and there has never been a time I have mistaken the two. Then again things just seem to have more bouquet here in NH.

MStehelin,
Dark brown with reddish tones...very dense, not much of a noticable grain...would make a great policeman's night stick?
If it was domestic, definitely red oak. I split a log in my garage a while back and could not believe the odor. If the wood was an import, who knows? I would imagine a lot of our lumber gets exported and then brought back home. Yours didn't have any little shiney green bugs in it, did it?

I barfed on a pallet several years ago....maybe you got some wood from it. ;-)
Red Oak- vomit? Gee whiz, a pile of split red oak is pure ambrosia for us country folk in Central Virginia. Wait till it gets real cold and fuel oil is $3 a gallon.

Frank,
good point. I should have mentioned also that I took that red oak log, spit it, shaved it, scraped it and bent it into some really nice parts for some chairs. It's a great wood for that application.

"and fuel oil is $3 a gallon." No kidding! We usually buy our first tank in mid-September, but the prices are going, we figured we'd better get it in July. Ouch! 300 gallons at $2.whatever a gallon.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
my heart bleeds for you!! 300 gal........pashaw!! Try 1100 gallons at 2.05/ gal and that is cheap. Another dealer in town is charging 2.29 for a prebuy price and they are selling out at that priceWicked Decent Woodworks

Cherryjohn, by nationally posted figures Hawaii is 92% of the cost of Chicago assuming you dont factor in trying to buy a house here. Ive owned mine for 25 years. Gasoline is almost 3 bucks.......what else is there? No winter clothes, boots. Surfboards are even cheaper here..... 8-0 aloha, mike
Hi,
I think your wood is "Angelim vermelho" (Latin name). My dutch wood catalogue has no Dutch or English name for it. From personal experience I can confirm that it smells very, very bad; like puke, stinking feet, stale sweat especially when you cut it.
I bought this wood for use in the garden thinking it was some kind of bankirai. The salesperson wrote the Latin name on the bill, that's why I was able to look it up later. I had to transport it inside the car and the smell was bad, but I thought it was because it was stacked in a wet pile. But when I started cutting it, yuk. My workshop is in the attack so I had to take the wood through the house several times, got some nice comments from the family.
When I was done I vacuumed my workshop carefully, got rid of all shavings and all left overs. For several weeks, whenever I used my bandsaw I would have some of the smell back.
Also for a couple of months the wood produced a bad smell every time it got wet (like a farmer had been spreading manure out in the fields).
According to my book it is very decay resistant and is used in constructions like bridges, ships, constructions in canals and ports but also for industrial floors and workbenches! It says that the smell will only disappear after a long time, further that is will produce stains when in contact with water, so should not be used for benches.
There is a wood we get here in Japan that smells horrible. It comes form Brazil if I remember correctly. It's holiday now but I'll ask my lumber man afterwards.
Gasoline in the US is almost $3, here it is $4.50/gal., has been for a long time, people in the US have nothing to complain about in compared to the rest of the world.
It's inevitable that in time prices in the US will match this.
Get ready for the big SUV sell off!

That gasoline is more expensive in Japan somehow doesn't make me feel any better here in Pennsylvania. ;-)
Cheer up! It's higher in Oregon than Pennsylvania. Course, our wood doesn't small like vomit....
Look at it this way, we're suffereing together 10,000 plus miles away.
The Wood is from indonesia. A creamy butter like colour. Hard as all hell. I broke my drill bit pre drilling a hole. Only smells like puke while cutting.
Cheers
I hear ya! Back in 1960 or so.. I forget Germany.. (Yep a USA Sholdier) I think it was somethin' a big POP-TOP beer bottle was EXPNSIVE THEN! ZZZZZZT.. I think in the USA we payed that for a Gallon...
This is clearly Indonesian Pukewood. I'm sure ol' Dr. Bruce Hoadley up at UMASS would agree.
Was the trash can in front of a frat house?
he he,
Mike
