wood species with the best screw holding capability
I’m putting bottom mount drawer slides in a old cabinet. In order to mout the rear slide bracket, I need to pad the back of the cabinet out about 5/16″. This relatively thin pad will be mostly what’s holding the screws. What species will give the screws the best “bite”?

My choice would be hard maple or beech using fine thread screws.
Screw holding capability
If you have any Bamboo around that stuff is really tough. You'll twist the head off the screw before you strip it out.
Hard to go wrong with oak but most any hardwood will do. Don't worry too much about it unless the drawer is holding an excess amount of weight which is unlikely.
