I recently began work on a bent wood dresser. The wood os hickory. After steam bending the wood, it has spots on it. I tried sanding but they do not come off. Any ideas what this is or how to get rid of it?

Sounds like some sort of water spotting. I'd give it a treatment with oxalic acid--wood bleach.
You do need to cover the entire surface to get even results. Apply, let dry, and then rise off with water and neutralize with baking soda before a final rinsing. I'd use distilled water for this process.

I agree. Especially for oak. I have also used filtered water with sucess. Mostly I only steam bend Ash and Hickory and they do not seem to spot whatever water I use.
Good call on the distilled water, WG. That little detail is usually left out of recommendations that involve water-on-wood. I've lived in places with extreeeeemly hard water, and just have the habit of using distilled. Always worth paying for, to eliminate any possible problem (even in areas that aren't known for these problems).
